VR Opportunities- Join National Film Board of Canada’s Ontario Studio

The National Film Board of Canada’s Ontario Studio is currently looking to fill a variety of positions on an interactive Unity-based room-scale virtual reality project. All candidates must be available to work in-house at the NFB’s downtown Toronto studio.

#1 Lead Unity Developer

Type of Position: Short term, contract
Length: 6 months (with possibility of extension)
Start Date: January 2019
The Lead Developer will work with Team Leads and the technical team to create an
interactive virtual reality experience using the Unity framework on a room-scale VR project.

Responsibilities:

❖ Drive the project’s technical efforts, including key decision-making, to hit project
objectives;
❖ Implement interactive experience functionality as per communicated design;
❖ Translate design specification into functional VR experience;
❖ Communicate with other team members to establish effective pipeline and integrate
media assets;
❖ Identify technical issues and solve complex problems with innovative solutions;
❖ Design, build, and maintain efficient, reusable, and reliable code;
❖ Ensure the best possible performance, quality, and responsiveness of applications;
❖ Identify bottlenecks and bugs, and devise solutions to address and mitigate these
problems;
❖ Help maintain code quality, organization, and automatization;
❖ Help with R&D regarding new interactive systems, visuals or audio solutions;
❖ Look development in Unity, including creation of particle systems and environment
lighting.

Qualifications:

❖ At least 5 years of professional experience working in Unity on a launched commercial
or independent game and/or virtual reality experience;
❖ Excellent knowledge of Unity, including experience with scripting, animation, Mecanim,
and motion capture data integration;
❖ Experience with AR/VR platforms;
❖ Strong understanding of level design and planning;
❖ Experience with game physics and particle systems;
❖ Strong math and physics skills;
❖ Experience working with motion capture systems;
❖ Experience with 3D tools like Maya, 3D Max , and Houdini is a plus;
❖ Strong understanding of object-oriented programming;
❖ Knack for writing clean, readable, and easily maintainable code;
❖ Proficient knowledge of code versioning tools such as Git, SVN, and Mercurial;
❖ Experience with FX and lighting in Unity preferred

#2 Unity Developers

Type of Position: Short term, contract
Length: 2-3 months (with possibility of extension)
Start Date: January, April

The Jr. Developers will work under the guidance of the Lead Developer to create an
interactive virtual reality experience using the Unity framework on a room-scale VR project.

Responsibilities:

❖ Implement interactive experience functionality as per communicated design;
❖ Translate design specification into functional VR experience;
❖ Communicate with other team members to establish effective pipeline and integrate
media assets;
❖ Work with lead developer following desired specifications and workflows;
❖ Design, build, and maintain efficient, reusable, and reliable code;
❖ Ensure the best possible performance, quality, and responsiveness of applications;
❖ Identify bottlenecks and bugs, and devise solutions to address and mitigate these
problems;
❖ Help maintain code quality, organization, and automatization;
❖ Help with R&D regarding new interactive systems, visuals or audio solutions;
❖ Look development in Unity, including creation of particle systems and environment
lighting.

Qualifications:

❖ At least 1-2 years of professional experience working on a launched commercial or
independent game and/or virtual reality experiences;
❖ Excellent knowledge of Unity, including experience with scripting, animation, Mecanim,
and motion capture data integration;
❖ Familiarity with level design and planning;
❖ Experience with game physics and particle systems
❖ Experience optimizing memory;
❖ Experience working with motion capture systems;
❖ Experience with 3D tools like Maya, 3D Max , Houdini is a plus
❖ Ability to constantly learn and stay in touch with evolving game standards and
development technologies (Timeline , In House Frameworks);
❖ Strong understanding of object-oriented programming;
❖ Knack for writing clean, readable, and easily maintainable code;
❖ Proficient knowledge of code versioning tools such as Git, SVN, and Mercurial;
❖ Experience with FX and lighting in Unity preferred.

#3 3D Character Artist

Type of Position: Short term, contract
Length: 12 weeks (with possibility of extension)
Start Date: January 2019
Working under the guidance of the Artistic Director, the Character Artist will be responsible
for all aspects of character development, from 2D concepts to textured 3D models, on a
Unity-based room-scale VR project.

Responsibilities:

❖ Collaborate with the Artistic Director and Team Leads to develop character concept art
and designs using traditional and/or digital drawing tools;
❖ Model and texture characters to be rigged, animated, and implemented into Unity;
❖ Maintain a high level of quality and productivity while hitting deadlines and collaborating
with team members on a daily basis.

Qualifications:

❖ A degree or diploma in 3D modeling, gaming or animation, or equivalent professional
experience;
❖ A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in look development, 3D modeling and texturing
characters for animation and/or video games created in Unity;
❖ Excellent knowledge and use of 3D software as it relates to character modeling;
❖ A strong understanding of and experience working in and implementing 3D assets in
Unity;
❖ Strong drawing skills and an excellent understanding of human anatomy, shape and
form;
❖ Additional skills including prop and environment modeling, character rigging and
animation are preferred but not necessary

#4 3D Environment Artist

Type of Position: Short term, contract
Length: 12 weeks (with possibility of extension)
Start Date: January 2019
Working under the guidance of the Artistic Director, the Environment Artist will be
responsible for all aspects of environment creation, from 2D concepts to textured 3D
models, on a Unity-based room-scale VR project.

Responsibilities:

❖ Collaborate with the Artistic Director and Team Leads to develop environment concept
art and designs using traditional and/or digital drawing tools;
❖ Model and texture buildings, props and environment assets to be implemented into
Unity;
❖ Maintain a high level of quality and productivity while hitting deadlines and collaborating
with team members on a daily basis.

Qualifications:

❖ A degree or diploma in 3D modeling, gaming or animation, or equivalent professional
experience;
❖ A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in look development, 3D modeling and texturing
environments for animation and/or video games created in Unity;
❖ Excellent knowledge and use of 3D software as it relates to environment modeling;
❖ A strong understanding of and experience working in and implementing 3D assets in
Unity;
❖ Strong drawing skills and an excellent understanding of architecture and organic
environments;
❖ The ideal candidate will also have strong skills in character design and modeling;
❖ Additional skills including character rigging and animation are preferred but not
necessary.

#5 3D Asset Artist / Generalist

Type of Position: Short term, contract
Length: 8 weeks (with possibility of extension)
Start Date: March 2019
Working under the guidance of the Artistic Director and Art Leads, the Asset Artist will be
responsible for modeling and texturing props and environment assets for use in Unity.

Responsibilities:

❖ Collaborate with the Artistic Director and Team Leads to develop concepts and designs
as needed using traditional and/or digital drawing tools;
❖ Model and texture props and environment assets for use in Unity;
❖ Maintain a high level of quality and productivity while hitting deadlines and collaborating
with team members on a daily basis.

Qualifications:

❖ A degree or diploma in 3D modeling, gaming or animation, or equivalent professional
experience;
❖ A minimum of 3 years of experience in look development, 3D modeling and texturing
assets for animation and/or video games created in Unity;
❖ Excellent knowledge and use of 3D software as it relates to modeling;
❖ A strong understanding of and experience working in and implementing 3D assets in
Unity;
❖ Strong drawing skills and an excellent understanding of architecture and organic
environments;
❖ Any additional skills including character modeling, rigging and animation, or any
experience working with lighting and FX in Unity are preferred.

#6 3D Rigging Artist

Type of Position: Short term, contract
Length: 6 weeks
Start Date: March 2019
Working under the guidance of the Artistic Director, the Rigging Artist will be responsible for
character and asset rigging for a Unity-based room-scale VR project.

Responsibilities:

❖ Rig characters and props to be animated and implemented into Unity;
❖ Maintain a high level of quality and productivity while hitting deadlines and collaborating
with team members on a daily basis.

Qualifications:

❖ A degree or diploma in 3D gaming or animation, or equivalent professional experience;
❖ A minimum of 3 years of experience in 3D rigging for animation and/or video games
created in Unity;
❖ Excellent knowledge and use of 3D software as it relates to character rigging;
❖ A strong understanding of and experience working in and implementing 3D assets in
Unity;
❖ Additional generalist skills including prop and environment modeling and character
animation are preferred but not necessary.
